About the Class:
‘the life studio as painted and perceptual space’
A Figurative Painting And Drawing Master Workshop
This studio class with Stuart Shils offers an orchestrated setting in which to engage with pictorial concerns ranging far beyond literal, naturalistic description and certainly not dwelling on “how to” paint the figure. Our primary objectives here will be learning how to see and frame the relationship between what is ‘out there’ in the room, our perception of it, and what appears on our working surface.
The three days will not be a conservative or “atelier” approach to figuration. rather, participants will focus on painting: pictorial structure, perceptual decision making and accountable looking with a model as very much part of the larger organization of form and color. We will also put a lot of emphasis on drawing for it’s own sake, not to go under the painting as a crutch but as the expository medium through which painting is understood.
The class will open the night before the first work day with a slide talk presenting themes related to what we will engage with in class.
